In 2012 we predicted that 2015 was the beginning of the end of the traditional lighting industry and the dawning of a new services paradigm.  The fight for control of your space (home, office, car and beyond) via competing protocols, has commenced and will accelerate.

As there are more lamps than people in the world, the host and hub for the sensors and associated services of this new paradigm will be new-generation luminaires and digital friendly LED supplied or controlled by the tech world.  This light and light-based technology network is the foundation of the internet-of-things.  Light already carries data down fibre and copper, but can now transmit via LED wirelessly.

As Governments are banning and phasing out traditional lamps, you will be drawn into the new paradigm.  Your competitors uptake of and consumer demand for the myriad of new products and services in the pipeline, will also force your hand.  There will be winners and losers – look into the fate of the lighting businesses of Philips, Osram, Samsung and General Electric.  They are the first casualties.

The new paradigm promises a lot, will cause disruption for consumers, owners of large lighting portfolios, developers, contractors and traditional supply chains and imbeds new risks and uncertainties.
